Testimonial by Carla

We love all our members at Defy Gravity!  They all have their own special story and journey with fitness.  Carla was willing to share her story about her 16 plus years doing Pilates! We love the fact that Pilates is functional fitness for life, not just a passing fad. Check out her story!

Why did you start Pilates?

When my sister got married, sixteen years ago, I was her matron of honor and the only bridesmaid. She chose a sleeveless dress for me to wear and I wanted to make sure my arms were toned for the occasion.  I had a friend in Los Angeles who had been doing Pilates with amazing results, so I thought it would be a good fit. There weren’t a lot of Pilates studios around in 2000, so I was lucky to find a good trainer on the first try.

When did you start Pilates?

I started Pilates 16 years ago in January, 2000.

When did you start taking classes at Defy Gravity?

I started taking classes at Defy Gravity from the first days they opened their studio in Corona del Mar. I knew Laura and Shannon from their previous studio.

What do you like most about Defy Gravity?

Defy Gravity has a great variety of classes. The cycle room is small, with space between the bikes, unlike the stuffy, jam packed typical cycle studios. The bike displays are a great addition to help me track my progress from one workout to the next. I like the Cycle w/ Bands and Purely Reformer classes the best.

What do you do for fun?

I love travel, photography, cooking healthy (I am a culinary nutrition expert and holistic health coach) and volunteering.

Anything else you want to share?

After so many years of practicing Pilates, it has become more than just a way to strengthen and tone. I leave every session feeling relaxed and it helps me maintain my flexibility. Aside from keeping me lean and strong, my years of Pilates has also helped eliminate the stiff necks I used to wake up with and Pilates was key to rehabilitating after two knee surgeries.  It’s more than just a way to work out, it’s a practice for life. My 73 year old mom even does Pilates. It keeps her back strong and keeps her out on the golf course.
